INVOCATION OF FOR THE HEALING RAINS (Vocal Olwen Fouére) We call to the corners of the universe To the Earth To the Water To the Fire To the Air We look to the heart of the sky And ask permission of the sacred elements And all these sacred energies To look upon us I know not if the voice of man can reach to the sky, I know not if the stars can hear us, I know not what will come to pass in future days, But I hope … ...only good will come

about

An album of meditations on time, humanity, confinement and hope.

Music, lyrics and programming by Michael Scott

Funded by The Arts Council/An Comhairle Ealaíon under it’s COVID-19 Crisis Response Award a special fund to enable Irish-based professional artists to provide access for the public to new and original art during the period of COVID-19 isolation.

This is an album of Laments "in a time of confinement" in three sections
Tenebrae (Latin for "darkness)
Caoineadh (Keening, Weeping and poetic Elegy)
Bealtaine (A Welcome to the light of spring and the future)

I asked … Olwen Fouere: Actress and Performer
Brid Ni Neachtain: Actress & singer
Hazel O’Connor : Rock Singer
….to make wordless laments (Caoineadh) expressing how they feel, where they are, in this time, and space, and place : - using the voice memos on their smart phones/Ipad - like distant calls and cries from another world. Using digital musical instruments the soundscapes become moments of expression, reflection, solitude, and contemplation.

Ireland has always turned to its women to vocalise it’s joys and sorrows in song:-
“Keening in English suggests a high-pitched, inarticulate moaning, but the Irish word Caoineadh, from which it derives signifies among other things, a highly articulate tradition of women's oral poetry. The lamenting woman led the community in a public display of grief. Her Caoineadh or lament was a series of breathless utterances of rhymed, rhythmic praise of the dead person and invective against enemies.”

THE BOOK OF LAMENTATIONS
The Book of Lamentations is originally a collection of poetic laments for the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. The book is partly a traditional "city lament" mourning the desertion of the city by God, its destruction, and the ultimate return of the divinity, and partly a funeral dirge in which the bereaved bewails and addresses the dead.
